You may be entitled to receive treatment, care and income support benefits for up to 12 months regardless of who was at fault, or longer depending on your injury and responsibility for the accident.

If you’ve lost a relative or are a dependant of a person who has passed away as a result of a motor accident, you may be able to claim for funeral expenses and compensation.

People also ask

We know lodging a claim can be confusing at times. The below frequently asked questions can help you understand the process

What does my claim cover?

If you have been injured in a motor accident in NSW, GIO is here to support you while you recover. Under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017 (NSW) you may be entitled to:

How do I receive treatment and rehabilitation?

When you lodge your claim, you will be given a claim number. This number is uniquely yours and allows us to identify your claim. If your health care practitioner recommends treatment to optimise your recovery, and provided it is reasonable and necessary, we can cover these expenses. You or your GP and treatment providers can send us requests to fund treatment or reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses. Simply quote your claim number when sending us these details.

What happens after I claim?

We are committed to providing you access to benefits as quickly as possible. Your Claims Advisor will contact you within 3 business days of receiving your application and advise you of the next steps in the claim process.

How long do I have to claim?

You should lodge your claim for statutory benefits as quickly as possible, and within three months after the date of the accident. If you want to claim payment for loss of earnings as a result of the accident, you need to lodge your claim within 28 days from the date of the accident in order to be paid from the day after the accident. If you don’t submit your claim within time, you will be required to provide a full and satisfactory explanation for the delay.

Different timeframes apply for compensation to relatives and damages claim.

My motor accident happened before 1 December 2017, what does that mean?

In 2017, there were some changes made to the NSW CTP Scheme. If your motor accident occurred before 1 December 2017, call us on 13 10 10 and we can help you lodge your claim.
