Beyond sustainable fisheries, our view of corporate social responsibility extends to our crews on land and at sea, to our customers around the world, and to the communities in which we work and play.
We attract and retain world-class customers and highly-skilled employees, and treat all with honesty, consideration, and dignity.
Local communities are important to us, and we strive to be good citizens and make each one a better place to live.
When it comes to corporate responsibility, we set higher standards for ourselves and we expect our industry to do the same.
Since its founding in 1997, our Western Alaska Community Grant Board has distributed more than $2 million in donations, grants, and scholarships to more than 100 nonprofit organizations and communities in Alaska.
As a founding member and major donor, American Seafoods helps SeaShare stock community food banks and meal centers in Alaska and the lower 48. To date, we’ve donated more than 15 million nutritious meals to SeaShare.
Through the Pollock Conservation Cooperative (PCC), founded by American Seafoods and other harvest companies, we’ve established a research center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to improve members’ knowledge of the North Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea. PCC is the largest private donor to the university.
American Seafoods also takes leadership positions in industry efforts to research and advance seafood sustainability through our participation in the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) and Alaska’s Responsible Fisheries Management Program.
Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are onbaord observers for each harvest. NOAA scientists gather data that helps monitor quotas for targeted and nontargeted species and helps ensure the sustainability of the fishery.
American Seafoods is a member of both the Pollock Conservation Cooperative (PCC) and the Pacific Whiting Conservation Cooperative (PWCC). With federally regulated allocations, co-op structures have effectively ended excessive fishing and processing while supporting important scientific research.
On board or in the office, a safe and healthy work environment is paramount. At American Seafoods, we employ certified safety professionals who engage our crew members in safety protocols at every level. Our captains, mates, and pursers all exceed the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards, and through a partnership with Vivid Learning Systems, we provide ongoing online training for numerous safety- and health-related topics.
